This is a companion piece to “From China To Gaza, Geopolitics Could Shape The Trump-Harris Debate.”
There is no guarantee that America will call the shots in the future. The rise of China, the realignment of the Middle East, and the neutrality of India, all point to America’s place and position in the world changing.
While this US presidential election is already historic, what raises the stakes is that the decisions made by the next president could expand America’s footprint to new heights or cause it to contract at frightening speed.
The next decades of American power could depend on the next four years - making this election even more significant.
As the candidates meet, below are ten geopolitical (and geoeconomic) questions that should be asked.
How should America take on China?
What is America’s plan for the West?
Does America need a national AI strategy?
How will America combat sanctions evasion?
Who are America’s new allies?
What global climate projects should America lead?
How will America compete with BRICS?
What will America do if Taiwan is invaded?
How will America manage global trade?
Should America have a sovereign wealth fund?
By asking these questions, the candidates will have to reveal their ideas on the most consequential geopolitical shifts and challenges - the kind that threaten America’s future in the world.
These are not easy questions to answer. And they cannot be answered in 60 seconds. But, people in the US and the world need to know where Harris or Trump will take the American ship over the next four years, towards the edge of the 2030s.
America and the world are at a historic crossroads. Geopolitics is no longer just a risk or something limited to North Korea or Afghanistan. Geopolitics is suddenly everywhere. It is transforming the globe.
What is taking place is putting the US-led world order under siege. Only bold, transformational ideas and strategies will keep America under the rising sun. Do the candidates have what it takes to lead America through a world turned upside down?
