AI Safety Is A New Battlefield Between Nations

The race to control AI takes a new turn

Earlier this year, 16 of the world’s leading AI companies, from the US to China to France to the UAE, pledged to develop AI safely. They made the announcement in May in Seoul, where the second AI Safety Summit was being held, after the first summit in the UK last November.

It was a rare moment of partnership between the US and China. But, as tensions and distrust rise, such “connections” are likely to remain shortlived. Because the chasms between world powers continue to grow.

One of these chasms is AI safety, a new “buzz phrase” that is appearing behind the AI strategies of major world powers. It is part of the convergence of geopolitics and AI, ongoing for almost a decade now.

At its core, AI safety is about three things.
