A new status quo is forming
Like during Trumpโs first term, unpredictability is everywhere once again. For a brief second, there was clarity on all the main trade fights brewing: Mexico, Canada, EU, and China. Then, Trump put the trade spotlight on Russia. After that, Colombia for a hot second. However, none of the โnew fightsโ (i.e. Moscow, Bogota) compare to Taiwan.
On January 27, while speaking to House Republicans in Florida, Trump warned that tariffs would soon be imposed on a range of critical imports, from chips to steel to drugs.
The levies could range from 25% to as high as 100%.
This massive escalation could put the global economy on a dangerous trajectory.
