Over the past few weeks, the Western bloc has permanently fragmented.
Of the many profound consequences and implications, one of the most significant is that Europe is rethinking its entire security strategy and its overall reliance on the US. This is not a result of the clash in the Oval Office between Trump and Zelensky. For years, even before the pandemic, the EU has been flirting with ideas around an EU army or โsovereign defense*.โ

At the beginning of last year, then-EU interior markets commissioner Thierry Breton proposed a 100 billion euro fund to bolster local defense procurement and integration between European defense industries. Then, during the US election last year, as Trump and other Republican candidates proposed the US leave NATO, the EU once again rang alarm bells.
