For decades, America has largely kept quiet when China did something. Whether it was with allies (i.e. Chinese coast guard vessels ramming Filipino fishermen) or trade (i.e. Chinese exports dominating global markets), Washington maintained a certain tone with Beijing. Even collisions with America itself, like the 2001 Hainan Incident, when a US reconnaissance plane and its crew were grounded in China, and the plane was sent back with all the technology ripped out, did not result in the US treating China like an enemy state.

All of this is now changing
