For the first time since February 2022, when Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began, a third country is entering the Ukraine war directly.
The South Korean spy agency, the National Intelligence Service (NIS), has said North Korea is sending upwards of 10,000 troops to fight in Ukraine. According to the NIS, between October 8 and 13, Russian warships offloaded at least 1,500 North Korean special forces soldiers at Vladivostok, a major Russian port in the Pacific close to North Korea. The North Korean soldiers are being housed in bases across Russia as they undergo training and prepare to be deployed on Ukrainian frontlines.
Some are viewing this as Russian desperation. Russian president Vladimir Putin does not want to “stir” Russian society with another conscription drive. Added to this, there are many unknowns as to how combat effective North Korean soldiers are.
But, this actually matters less in the grander scheme of what is occurring. By sending troops to Ukraine, North Korea has completely upended global security.
This is a major geopolitical moment that could ricochet throughout the world. The Ukraine war now links Europe and Asia directly. It is now a Eurasian conflict.
