On July 28, 2024, Venezuela held national elections to select a president for the next six years. It was a closely watched election for many reasons. One of them, was that for months, prior to the election, Venezuela, suffering from economic and social turmoil, due to poor policies and sanctions, was exploring an arrangement with Washington. It would trade sanctions relief for democratic reforms, including more transparent elections.
However, this deal, part of a separate US strategy to bring Venezuelan oil back into the global market (and bring down prices), fell through as Caracas rejected the US demands.
